People frequently mix door supervisors with security guards and vice versa. Security guards and door supervisors are two sides of the same coin, with similar functions but varying levels of power and responsibility. While a licensed door supervisor can operate as a security guard, a security guard with the required licence cannot take the place of a door supervisor. So, how do these two jobs differ?
A security guard can work in a range of non-licensed establishments, including retail and corporate environments. Security guards are not permitted to work in places that allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages. While the duty of a security guard varies depending on the client and business, the main function of the position is to guarantee that the premises run smoothly. This is accomplished by ensuring the safety of customers, the general public, and employees who frequently visit the premises, as well as the security of the property.
It is also the security guard’s responsibility to keep an eye on the surroundings and endeavour to avoid and discourage any appearance of disorderly behaviour or theft, as well as to report any suspicious incidents or potential threats to the relevant authorities.
The Security Guard Training course takes a total of 26 hours to complete, and the course includes a total of three modules. These are:
The activities of manned SIA security guards are divided into three areas. They can include things like maintaining a physical presence, patrolling, or providing surveillance services to dissuade bad behaviour or provide information about bad behaviour and activities when they happen. The following are examples of guarding activities:
A door supervisor is someone who works on a property that has been approved by the local government. These include establishments that serve alcohol, such as bars, pubs, clubs, and entertainment venues. The door supervisor’s responsibility is to ensure the security and safety of all visitors and customers on the premises. They are in charge of determining the acceptability of people entering the venue and making proper decisions about who gets in and who doesn’t.
The age and behaviour of those attempting to obtain entry into the venue may be used as judging criteria, such as if the person is under the age of 18, is carrying harmful weapons or illicit substances, or is acting in a disruptive manner. Door supervisors are also in charge of preserving order on the premises, controlling crowds, resolving disagreements and emergencies within the venue, and collaborating with management and the police.
The Door Supervision Training course is for 4 days. The course includes a total of 20 hours of classroom teaching and a written test. There are four units in the course:
If any manned guarding tasks include licenced establishments, a door supervisor is the type of guard you must have by law. In this context, licenced premises are those that are available to the public for the drinking of alcohol or that provide regulated entertainment on-site.
An SIA door supervisor isn’t responsible for all manned guarding. Close protection, the protection of cash and valuables while in transportation, and public space CCTV surveillance, for example, all require specific permits. There’s also the traditional security guard to consider. For manned guarding action that does not come under the purview of any of the speciality licences, a general security licence is necessary.
Traditional security guards with minimal licences are excellent for areas where security is required but no alcohol is served. Patrolling, safeguarding, and monitoring business facilities after hours, for example, is a significant function that many security guards perform.
It’s critical to be aware of the limitations on the use of CCTV by regular security personnel. They are allowed to use CCTV to identify trespassers and defend property, but they are not allowed to use it to monitor public activities or to identify a specific person. Standard security guards are not permitted to work in public locations such as shopping malls since they require a Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence.
An SIA door supervisor is a legal requirement on locations where alcohol will be served, as previously stated. Their training focuses on the common issues that door supervisors face on a daily basis. This covers abilities like conflict resolution and physical intervention. As a result, they are prepared to deal with inebriated and potentially violent individuals.
SIA door supervisors are essential for licenced establishments throughout the UK. If no alcohol is served, an SIA-approved security guard will be required.
