Product Description

Introduction

The Employment Trace service is a specialist investigation designed to establish whether a debtor, tenant, former tenant, or defendant is currently in employment. Knowing a debtor’s employment status is the critical first step in pursuing an Attachment of Earnings Order — one of the most effective enforcement methods available, where money is deducted directly from wages before the debtor is paid. Shergroup’s Investigations Department conducts a comprehensive multidatabase search to identify employer details, employment status, and contact information, giving you the intelligence you need to take the next step in recovering your money.

How it works

You provide us with the debtor’s full name, current or last known address, date of birth, and any telephone numbers you hold. Our investigators then run the subject through 12+ professional databases and intelligence sources — including Companies House records,
the Electoral Register, credit reference data, and employment verification services — to build a complete picture. Within 15 working days, you receive a comprehensive written report detailing the debtor’s employer (company name, registered number, and business address), their employment status (PAYE employee, company director, or self-employed), verified contact numbers, and confirmed identity details.

Why choose Shergroup

Unlike generic tracing agents, Shergroup’s Investigations team sits within a full-service enforcement group. That means your employment trace isn’t just a report that gets filed away — it’s the launchpad for real enforcement action. If we confirm the debtor is
employed, Shergroup Legal can immediately apply for an Attachment of Earnings Order on your behalf, creating a seamless pathway from intelligence to recovery. Our enforcement heritage means we know exactly what information the court needs, and our reports are formatted accordingly. And if the trace reveals the debtor is self-employed or a company director rather than a PAYE employee, we’ll advise you on the alternative enforcement routes available — such as charging orders, third party debt orders, or High Court enforcement — so you always have a clear next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the trace doesn’t find any employment?

If our investigation cannot identify current employment — for example because the debtor is unemployed, retired, or working cash-in-hand — you still receive a full report detailing everything we did find, including any addresses, contact numbers, company directorships, and asset indicators. We’ll also recommend alternative enforcement options such as charging orders against property or High Court enforcement using writs of control.

Can I use the employment trace report in court?

Yes. Our reports are formatted for use in enforcement proceedings, including Attachment of Earnings Order applications. The report provides the employer details and debtor information that the court requires on Form N337.

What happens if the debtor turns out to be self-employed or a company director?

An Attachment of Earnings Order only works against PAYE employees — it cannot be used against selfemployed individuals or directors who take dividends rather than salary. If our trace reveals this, we’ll advise on alternative enforcement methods. Knowing this upfront saves you the cost and delay of making an AEO application that would fail.

What information do I need to provide to start a trace?

We need the debtor’s full legal name, their current or last known address including postcode, and their date of birth. Telephone numbers (mobile or landline) are helpful but not essential. The more information you provide, the faster and more accurate the search.

Is this service GDPR compliant?

Yes. All employment traces are conducted in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The investigation is carried out under the legitimate interest of enforcing a court judgment, and all data is handled securely and confidentially.

Can I order this for a tenant or former tenant who owes rent arrears?

Absolutely. Provided you hold a County Court Judgment (CCJ) or High Court Judgment against the individual, an employment trace can help you identify whether they are in work and enable you to pursue an Attachment of Earnings Order to recover the debt directly from their wages.
