How to Clear Your Credit Record in the UK – Fast and Legally

What Is a CCJ and Why Does It Matter?

A County Court Judgment (CCJ) is a legal ruling issued when someone fails to repay a debt. In the UK, it is a serious red flag on your credit record, affecting your ability to:

  • Secure loans or mortgages
  • Rent a property
  • Open business accounts
  • Even get a mobile phone contract

The removal of a CCJ is a vital step for anyone who wants to restore their credit score and financial freedom.

At Shergroup, we have supported hundreds of individuals and business owners with CCJ removal in the UK, guiding them through the legal steps to clean up their credit file.

CCJ Removal UK: Can You Really Get It Off Your Credit Report?

Yes—you absolutely can, under the right circumstances. Here is how:

1. Pay the CCJ Within One Month

If you pay the full amount within 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks) of the judgment date, it will not appear on your credit file at all. You will need to request a certificate of cancellation from the court.

2. Apply for a CCJ to Be Set Aside

If you were not aware of the court action (for example, you never received the claim form), you can apply to have the judgment set aside. This removes the CCJ from your record entirely, provided you act promptly and can demonstrate a valid reason.

3. Pay the CCJ After One Month

If you pay in full after 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks), the CCJ stays on your record but will be marked as “satisfied.” This looks better to lenders, but it is different from the full removal of a CCJ

Tip: A satisfied CCJ is still visible for six years—but it is a step in the right direction.
