As enforcement agents, we realized a long time ago that the security guard business is not the same as law enforcement. We thought that being in the enforcement industry it will be easy for us to start security guarding services, we were wrong. If anyone attempts to run their security guard business as a quasi-law enforcement agency, your results will be less than optimal. Although both have similarities, they are completely different types of organizations. Despite the fact that both organisations are dedicated to defending people and property, they operate in quite different circumstances.
Let’s address here some of the key differentiating factors between the two security guarding and law enforcement.
The difference in training for security officers and law enforcement officers is night and day. Security officer training is measured in hours (usually 0–40), whereas police officer training is measured in weeks (on average 20–30). As a result of that training, a significantly different culture, mindset, and degree of commitment emerge. Trying to treat security officers like cops will result in low morale and excessive turnover.
Second, the two groups’ financing sources are on opposite extremes of the spectrum. Budgets for law enforcement agencies are largely based on local government grants. Security guard companies, on the other hand, rely on being able to secure contracts in order to stay in business and develop. All security guard firms must be able to go out into the marketplace and request contracts.
Third, each of these organisations has its approach to dealing with its consumers. Police officers and other law enforcement officers are not expected to interact with their clients, who are the citizens under their authority, on a regular basis. Security guard businesses, on the other hand, must encourage their officers to be deeply engaged with their consumers. The security guard company risks losing customers and contracts if their security employees are not friendly and approachable.
A security guard company cannot be considered as a police department. Although some clients feel that having a law enforcement background means you’ll get good security service, the two are unrelated. On our road to developing a successful business, we learnt that lesson and many more, many of which we learned through trial and error. Long hours were spent taking classes, reading articles, and digesting books about how to start and run a profitable business.
